Appetite:The American Pastime
A natural desire to satisfy a bodily need, esp. for food.
A strong desire or liking for something.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of the United States
or its inhabitants.
An activity that someone does regularly for enjoyment rather
than work; a hobby.
What are the defining attributes of the American appetite and how do they appear in the landscape of contemporary culture of the United States as well as our ever-expanding global environment? How have the desires of a quintessentially American outlook imprinted the global structure and what impact does it have on those who expect to freely participate within it? The myth of the American Dream still plays a dominant role within the culture, though as we continue along the path to global systems of exchange the belief in American exceptionalism is fast becoming an insular point of definition. Our appetites, desires and modes of consumption are being driven by this belief system, though this promise of America is quickly eroding, as our focus turns outward. Our voice is changing and with it our face: Is this face the one that others still find desirable or has it become indistinguishable within the changing landscape?
